The California State Junior Lifeguards Program is designed for children ages 8-15. We are dedicated to sharing beach and ocean safety information with participants. Our goal is to provide a program of physical fitness, first aid and CPR training, and exposure to ocean oriented sports and activities.

Our program is coordinated by actual California State Lifeguards who are trained in advanced first aid and rescue techniques and have many years of ocean rescue experience. Many instructors hold EMT certificates as well. In most cases they were Junior Lifeguards themselves! It is for this reason that you can be rest assured that your child is under the best of care while at San Clemente State Junior Lifeguards.

An emphasis on ocean safety and proper water etiquette will be stressed. Throughout daily workouts and free-time, Junior Lifeguards will increase their water safety skills and become more comfortable and confident in the ocean.

 

2017 PROGRAM DATES & FEES

Session 1: June 12th – June 30th

Session 2: July 3rd – july 21st

Session 3: July 24th – August 11th

ALL SESSIONS (3WEEKS) – $399

MONDAY – FRIDAY

9:00 am – 3:00 pm

 

  • Payments for our program can be made on www.active.com STARTING APRIL 1ST
  • Cost goes up by $25 two weeks before the start of the session
  • Discounts (10%) for 2ND JUNIOR GUARD attending the same session or for a JG attending 2 OR MORE sessions
  • Please contact our office about financial aide and military discounts. All financial aide is given out on a first come, first served basis and is based upon the Federal School Lunch guidelines

 

TRYOUTS

The San Clemente State Junior Lifeguard Program conducts swim tryouts to ensure your child is physically capable to succeed in our program. Please join us at one of the tryout dates (see below) to sign up for our program and purchase uniform items. We will only accept new applicants at the tryout. All necessary paperwork will be available at the tryout or you may download it from the site and bring it with you to the tryout completed.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • 100 yard swim in two minutes or less (four laps in a standard 25 yd pool)
  • Tread water for five minutes
  • Swim underwater for ten yards

TIPS

  • Be sure to bring a swimsuit and goggles. A cap is also highly recommended
  • No reservations are required
  • Show up ready to swim
  • Don’t worry about getting in – We do not have a set number of spots available and rarely stop taking applications
  • Program applications can be downloaded under our FORMS tab – Please bring these completed to save time
  • Uniform orders and sizing will take place after your tryout
  • We do not accept CASH or money orders
  • PLEASE MAKE ALL CHECKS OUT TO SCSLA

 

A TYPICAL DAY

9:00am ARRIVAL AT THE JUNIOR LIFEGUARD TOWER & WARM UP

  • Stretches
  • Sit ups
  • Push ups

DAILY WORKOUT, aka DAILY VITAMIN

  • Run to one of the California State Lifeguard towers
  • Swim to one of the two Junior Lifeguard buoys

LECTURE

  • Beach and ocean safety
  • First aid and CPR
  • Environment and conservation

FREE-TIME OF CHOICE

  • Stand-up paddle
  • Surf
  • Snorkel
  • Kayak
  • Bodysurf
  • Boogie board
  • Play in the ocean or on the sand

GROUP ACTIVITY

  • Beach Flags
  • Ocean Flags
  • Paddle Relays
  • Swim Relays
  • Run Relays
  • Dodgeball
  • Capture the Flag
    • DURING COMPETITION TIME, GROUP ACTIVITIES WILL BE GEARED TOWARDS COMPETITION STYLE EVENTS

LAST MINUTE INSTRUCTIONS & BEACH CLEAN-UP
