The California State Park Junior Lifeguard program is designed for kids ages 8-15 and is dedicated to sharing beach and ocean safety information with it’s participants as well as providing a program of physical fitness, first aid and CPR and exposure to ocean oriented sports and activities, including competitions and traditional challenges such as the Iron man and Pier run.
The program runs from 9:00 in the morning until 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
There are two sessions each summer at San Clemente State Beach.

Session 1: June 28 to July 23

Session 2 : August 2 to August 27

The program runs from 9:00 in the morning until 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Our Program is coordinated by actual California State Lifeguard Instructors who are trained in advanced first aid and rescue techniques and in most cases were junior guards themselves. It is for this reason that when you enroll your child into JG's you can rest assured that he or she is under the best of care.

An emphasis on ocean safety and proper water etiquette will be stressed and through daily workouts and free time JG’s will increase their water safety skills and become more comfortable and confident in the ocean. All these activities are supervised by open water lifeguards with many years of ocean rescue experience and advanced training in First Aid and CPR. Many of our instructors also hold EMT certificates as well.

A Typical Fun Day!

Your day begins in your squads at 9am with a warm up led by our Youth Aids. Warm up includes stretching, sit ups and push ups to build strength. This is followed by our daily vitamin or workout which usually consist of a run to one of the State lifeguard towers followed by a swim out to one of the two JG buoys. These workouts make you strong and condition you to get in shape for activities, competitions, and outside sports programs. When you have completed the daily workout, you will return to the JG area and prepare for the lecture of the day.

Lecture topics include beach and ocean safety, first aid and CPR, the environment and conservation. When the lecture ends, JG's are given a period of free time. During this time they can stand up paddle, surf, snorkel, kayak (as conditions permit), body surf, boogie board, and play in the ocean or on the sand. All the equipment is provided and included beach games, balls, sand toys, surf boards, boogie boards, fins kayaks and stand up paddle boards.
In the afternoon, there is a group activity.

Activities range from beach flags and paddle relays to capture the flag and dodge ball. During competition time afternoon activities will be geared towards competition style events. Additionally days such as our ping pong tournament, Cream Puff Olympics and Dodge ball tournament will be added.

At the end of the day JG’s will pack up their stuff and head under the tarps for last minute instructions and as needed will perform a beach clean up. Students will be released at 3 to make the walk back up the trail.
